# How to Request a Packaging Quote: 9 Details for Accurate Pricing

[Scott Kuhnel](https://www.gprinting.com/blog/author/scott-kuhnel)

**To get an accurate packaging quote quickly, send your manufacturer nine things:** product dimensions, packaging format, quantities, materials, print specs, finishes and inserts, artwork status, delivery details, and your timeline. The more complete the request, the fewer follow-up emails and the less guesswork built into the price.

Vague requests tend to get vague quotes. A note like “a nice rigid box, around 1,000 units” usually starts a round of questions instead of a price, and a quote built on assumptions can change once the real specs come out. Here’s what to include so the first quote you get is close to the last one.

## The 9 Details to Include in Your Quote Request

### 1. Product size, weight, and fragility

Packaging is sized around the product, so send measurements of the product itself rather than the box you picture. Add its weight and flag anything fragile, oddly shaped, or heavy for its size, because those details drive structure, board choice, and inserts.

### 2. Packaging format

Name the format you have in mind: rigid box, folding carton, litho-laminated corrugate, display, or mailer. If you’re not sure, describe what the package has to do (sit on a retail shelf, ship to a customer’s door, arrive as a gift) and let the manufacturer recommend a format.

### 3. Quantities, as a range

Ask for pricing at several quantity levels, such as 1,000, 2,500, and 5,000. Per-unit price generally drops as quantity rises because setup costs spread across more units, and minimums vary by format. Our post on [minimum order quantities for luxury gift boxes](https://www.gprinting.com/blog/what-are-minimum-order-quantities-for-luxury-gift-boxes) explains how that plays out.

### 4. Materials and structure

Share the board thickness, wrap paper, and interior you want. If you don’t know yet, send a reference: a box you like, a photo, or a sample. For a sense of how these choices move the price, see [What Does Rigid Box Packaging Cost?](https://www.gprinting.com/blog/what-does-rigid-box-packaing-cost).

### 5. Print specifications

Say how many colors you’re printing, whether any brand colors must match exactly, and whether the print covers the exterior only or the interior as well. More coverage and tighter color requirements both affect price.

### 6. Finishes and inserts

List any foil stamping, embossing, debossing, soft-touch coating, spot gloss, magnetic closure, or fitted insert. If budget matters, ask for the quote with and without each premium option. Seeing each upgrade priced separately makes it easy to decide which ones are worth it.

### 7. Artwork status

Tell the team whether you have final artwork, a rough concept, or nothing yet. A quote based on a concept can change once the structural layout is set, so it helps to understand [how to plan dielines for packaging](https://www.gprinting.com/blog/how-to-plan-dielines-for-packaging) before you start.

### 8. Delivery details

Include where the order is going, whether you want it delivered flat or assembled, and any receiving requirements. Where the packaging is produced affects both timing and total landed cost, so if you’re weighing overseas production, our [buying packaging and printing offshore](https://www.gprinting.com/learning-center/buying-packaging-printing-offshore) guide is a useful place to start.

### 9. Timeline and target budget

Give the date you need the packaging in hand, and a target price per unit if you have one. A target lets the team steer you toward options that fit instead of quoting a spec you can’t afford. Tight timelines can also narrow the options, so the earlier you share the date, the better.

## How to Compare Quotes Side by Side

Two quotes for “the same box” often aren’t the same box. Before you compare totals, check that each quote covers:

- The same dimensions, board, finishes, and inserts
- One-time costs such as tooling, dies, and plates, either included or listed separately
- Samples or prototypes, either included or priced as an add-on
- Freight and delivery to your location
- How overs and unders are handled, since printed runs can come in slightly above or below the ordered quantity
- Lead time measured from artwork approval, not from the order date

Before approving a large run, ask for a physical sample. [Packaging Mockup vs. Packaging Sample: What’s the Difference?](https://www.gprinting.com/blog/packaging-mockup-packaging-sample-whats-the-difference) explains which one fits your stage.

## Quick Answers

### How long does it take to get a packaging quote?

It depends on how complete your request is and how custom the structure is. A request with full specs is faster to price, while a new structure may need an engineering review first.

### Do I need final artwork to get a quote?

No. A concept and rough dimensions are enough for a ballpark price. Final pricing needs a confirmed structure and artwork specs.

### Is a sample included in the quote?

It varies by manufacturer and project, so ask. Make sure each quote you compare treats samples the same way.

Bring this list to your next conversation with a packaging manufacturer, and you’ll skip most of the back-and-forth. When you’re ready, our [request a quote page](https://www.gprinting.com/request-a-quote/) is the place to start.
